Minaret Lake late July

After quite a strenuous hike in the eastern sierra, we were rewarded with this pristine mountain lake, framed by the jagged peaks of the Minarets. The lake was still half covered with ice and snow, yet in sheltered places scarlet pestemon and heather were in bloom. It was a study in contrasts, which is what I tried to capture in this painting.
