I was running a plein air group and invited artists to come to the spot, but as sometimes happens, I was the only one. No matter, I decided to go to the back of the nursery I had invited them to, and there I found these lovely trees in a gorgeous perspective. I chose before sunrise (probably why nobody showed up!) It was a lovely moment with my herding dog and I in the dark, waiting for the sun to rise. I set up quickly and did an immediate quick blocking in of the trees’ perspective. This was my first attempt at some thing with the moody atmosphere. Happily, I had a student asked me to teach her how to paint in this method. I felt it was out of my comfort range, but having just done this one, I did a demo for her in her private class with me from photographs of the scene and my painting, and memory. Since then, I’ve turned this into several different studies and have been encouraged to do more in this style.
